It is slowly starting first as a trickle and then an itch and finally a raging need. Stitching for the holidays has always entered yearly into my life that way. I've truly created a very versatile and fun design to make completely inside your embroidery hoop... well, nearly. Zigzag stitching the parts together -- although can be accomplished inside your hoop -- its faster if you zigzag the traditional way in sewing! While resting on my porch this week, I spied my Strawberry plants "peeking" from under the mulch and smiled. It's nearly time for picnics, Strawberries 'N' Cream and shortcakes too! A delicate plant, it brings so much joy for many as a scrumptious dessert. I've captured my favorite right here for you to stitch. It's beautiful flowing pattern is created by using a "Hoop N Stitch" method of embroidery using "templates". By use of these templates at their sized 1:1 ratio, you can mark placement on your fabric and use the grid marks on your hoop or plastic grid template to drop your needle "SPOT ON" and stitch! Apple Mania

A piece that is special to my heart and still in my possession! Many customers and friends wonder about my home decor.

When I paint, I paint what I love the most. Great rule to follow when you're an artist involved in resale. You will never be quite disappointed if the piece doesn't move. Due to these continued happy events, my home doesn't get the benefit of my work often! (That's being remedied as we speak!)

This special trunk was a gift to me from a friend who thought it a challenge to paint and thought I would enjoy applying paint to it. It was blank and it held all kinds of possibilities! Of course, being the fruit loving artist that I am, it had to have just that design painted on it!

Strawberries, apples, grapes and blue silk ribbon swirl upon it's lid. A wonderful gift for that special friend. Fill it with small goodies like sewing implements and/or fresh baked cookies! Use it for a get well basket for someone who is ill on the mend or for a wonderful hospital visit! Fill it with toiletries and small reading... just to show you care.

For your office, it can serve as an excellent storage box to keep the clutter bugs at bay. So many beautiful uses for this piece. Fruit is a design that never goes out of style. If you're interested in this one-of-a-kind piece, email me!

A Sweets Treasure

In continuing with my "Apples" decor, I thought of a treasure that could be displayed as a wonderful piece of art!

Vintage vinyl records have always held a special appeal for me. In this photo, I applied the apple motif from my CASA bench to a small fruit spray area of an old RCA Victor LP.

The LP can be suitably framed and placed upon a wall to add to your decor. If I remember correctly, the LP I found at a local flea market was entitled, "Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree" as sung by The Andrew Sisters! A perfect combination!

I'm creating more of these as I'm receiving requests for them and cannot wait to show you how they turn out. If you are interested in a one-of-a-kind piece of toll painted memorabilia, send me a message!

A Childhood Treasure Renewed

Whimsical at heart, our Carousel horse was a rescued toy. Taken from the old spring horse graveyard, our steed was cleaned, based and painted creating a beauty to behold! The body is painted in a gel white using a pearl medium. Florals are added to the saddle and a buillon fringe, tassels, braided cord and vintage broaches adorn our pony. A fluted pole was placed through the center and a weighted stand was created for its base.

Selling almost immediately, I have driven by and looked over into a local shop window where he sits as an adornment. Now I'm looking for another large spring horse. I want to place one in my rose garden!

A Fruity Donation

I wanted to share with you some past works and collections special to me here at Kitty Kitty Designs. Kitty Kitty Designs supports C.A.S.A.

C.A.S.A stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.

Annually, we support C.A.S.A here in our local chapter when the "Festival of Chairs" auction occurs each fall. Our submission for the "Festival of Chairs" was an apple bench. Created from the headboard and footboard of a twin bed set, this piece was honored as the Top Favorite in the auction and was gallantly auctioned last preserving the "Best for Last" category.

A wonderful evening was had by all. Silent Auctions abounded and the final chair auctions capped off an evening of fund raising complete with buffet and orchestra. Lots of laughter, support from local business entities left the C.A.S.A. Chapter of Conway, AR with the funds necessary to continue their work.

My painting still continues and this fall I will complete yet another donation for C.A.S.A. as more than ever, the funds are needed. The wonderful bench now sits in a loving home of a local doctor.

Layers of acrylic are applied shaping the wonderful fruit and hoping to capture the realism in my mind. The photo's above and below show the bench from where it ended to where it started. I chose to list them backwards so you could trace the beautiful piece to it's meager beginnings.

I chose fruit against the black background because the colors are so vibrant and lush! Grapes, lemons and fresh apples sit among soft leaves.

When you move that brush, you "sculpt" with paint and I am happy with my apple as it begins to take shape. An artist is always nervous when working on a piece. Not that mistakes will ruin an item, because that will happen from time to time, but in wondering how others will look at the work in progress.

A lucious row of apples begins to take shape. You can see where my thoughts are taking me in placement of my grapes. Further left, a lemon is already based in. To this point in the bench seat, I've already invested well over 30 hours of work.

Believing in what you will accomplish keeps the creative spirit flowing. Practice in painting makes perfect! (Or near perfect!) Taking your time with each section ensures satisfaction as a slow process enables the artist to rest in the balance of the piece. Symmetry is every where we look. More so in hand art as the hand and eye work together to achieve the goal of beauty.

Nearly completed it's time to work on other sections! Happy inside is an understatement!

I'm happy that the glossy glow of a shining apple shows up so well on my prize project! I can tell that this entire piece will be satisfying for me.

The red gloss bed knobs shine and cause the eye to cast upon the fresh fruity colors awaiting a closer look. The reactions of the judges as well as the benefactors was worth all the hard work. It blesses your heart to be able to create a piece that will draw from donations needed to fund C.A.S.A.

As you can see, from black palette to finished piece I was just "itching" to get started. My favorite background to paint on is black.

Remember this. If you paint and enjoy creating "HANDMADE" items, think twice about discarding old pieces of furniture that have lost their use! This once damaged maple bed transformed under paint and design to become a benefit for those children in need of our help.

We enjoy our whimsy and can't seen to get enough of it! The image above is our next design in support of Enchanted Makeovers. We're happy to announce our partnership with Terry Grahl, Founder of "Enchanted Makeovers". In the October 2010 issue of "American Patchwork & Quilting" is a feature article on Terry and "Enchanted Makeovers" 2009 Vision Project. In the featured article is the story of how "Enchanted Makeovers" began. Kitty Kitty Designs digitized and donated original art for wonderful embroidery in support of the 2009 Vision Project. Pillow cases were stitched with "Ask, Believe & Receive" being the message for the receiver. Our embroidery work is featured by photo in the article. (On stands August 3.)

Along with our partners and friends, we believe in "Enchanted Makeovers" and the vision of the Traveling Sanctuary. Hummingbird's Dance Ornament

I cannot get enough Hummingbirds into my decor! It's either birds and cats or cats and birds and at least the birds are stitched! (No feathers flying around here!) FSL or "Free Standing Lace" is a technique in machine embroidery where layers of stitching are stitched one upon the other to create a "net" to catch the water soluble stabilizer below. Intricate patterns to simple designs are placed into the designed "net" or on top creating a design. When unhooped and stabilizer rinsed away, a stand alone piece of beauty is left behind for you to admire!

Spring is here! While I truly love snowflakes, it's the singing birds and green grass that holds appeal for me! This past weekend, it was especially nice and I quickly threw open the doors and windows opting for fresh air over machine air. Invigorating as this is, it inspired me to sort through my winter stashes and begin the heavy task of "Spring Cleaning". While rummaging through my Fat Quarters, I found "Tiny Too!" "Tiny Too!" is a 'teeny' Button Roo who fondly captures lost buttons for her fabulous collection. I dare say she has some buttons that a vintage collector might love! "Tiny Too" relishes hiding her buttons among the pins and needles of my sewing case and for the life of me, until meeting this impish waif, I couldn't figure out HOW my buttons were making it to my sewing pins. If she could speak a language I might comprehend, I'm sure she would simply say, "the shiny pins make my buttons gleam!" Well... to each their own I say. I've learned never to argue with a "Button Roo". Keep your eyes upon your emails... "Button Roos 2" is near!

An Arkansas Blizzard

We were given a chance to sit still and rest for a few days when the blizzard hit last week. God's most beautiful time of quiet and rest is when it's silently snowing and the soft hiss of the snow hitting the ground is so peaceful! The flakes were as large as tea cup saucers at one point and we couldn't even see across to the next farm. Although I know many are without energy in the northeast US, and probably tired of it all... for me here in Arkansas, it was a nice break. More on the way tonight!

It's Almost Time!

I cannot believe that summer is nearing its end and school will soon begin here in the South. Already the parents are flocking to the sales and the kids are excited as a new school year is beginning.

Most excited are the new parents of those tots who are attending school for the first time! Excitement is mixed with sadness as yet another page in the lives flips to reveal a brand new stage for their loved ones.

I always loved a new year of school. Fresh books and crisp paper. The smell of hand printed mimeograph hand outs... "Ahhh... remember those damp papers you passed over your head to the person behind you?" The ink still fresh in my mind.

Or for me, the artist... that new sketch diary, Conte crayons and fresh pastels... and the awaiting of that first art class assignment.

Renewing friendships that had slacked during the summer and catching up with all the hopes and dreams of close friends. With these fond memories in place, I have created "Back To School" for those tiny tots making their first burst onto the playground scene. Adjusting to their new surroundings and making new friends to last a life time.

After such fun designing these cute "Meeces", I find I cannot get past wanting to create more! Ahhh... but more is what I'm working on and they get along so very well with the Sprites and Pixies. They have educated themselves in the fine art of dressing for tea.

Our first set, "Meecing Around" was a great success! Many commented that they just didn't like mice...ANY WHERE.... but could enjoy stitching these! These adorable "critters" are so fun to design. "The Party's Over" is our second set of "Meeces" and it arrives this week!

Sweet slumber after a night of dancing... remember those days? I can just hear their tiny snores....

I sat and watched the birds last Sunday on Mother's Day gleefully playing in the soggy ground fluttering up and down and up and down and couldn't figure out what held their attention until I saw the tiniest of "leaps" directly up from the ground... a startled field mouse.

My guess is the Wrens were feeling invaded. As each tiny flap of a wing and dart at the mouse occurred, the tiny thing bounced and scurried along it's way to safety.

I've always loved mice although not inside my pantry! Inspired by what I watched, I have created a set of fashionable mice who are "Meecing Around". Releasing tomorrow for all to view.

They are, after all, delicate little creatures that can eat their day away and never gain a pound. Is there something to learn there??

Call Me A Romantic.... Whimsy Style!

Of course you all know by now that this whimsical mind never ceases to create and some of my best creations in character art come from just every day life happenstance. From watching an ant carry it's food to the den for others to eat from or a hummingbird resting for just a brief second while it sips sweet nectar, my mind envisions the fantasy/fairy side of these events.

Spring has burst forth down south where we live happily and with it all the delights of flowers, pretty insects and the urge to sit on the porch and take in the birdsong of the Mockingbirds and wonder how life can pass us by so quickly.

Soon it's time to gather my legs underneath me and stand to return to my graphic tablet and produce the art I love so well. This week holds new releases like fresh born spring that will inspire the embroidery enthusiast in you to create beyond your wildest imaginings....

Clocks...The Tick-Tock of Life!

Beautiful clocks are my down fall. I stare in wonder at antique clocks still chiming away and ticking softly after so many years of time have passed. The soft, gentle ticking of a mantle clock brings back the memories of childhood snuggled in my grandfather's leather chair smelling the tobacco from his cuspidor and dozing off to the sound of his antique clock on the mantle of his den. TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK... off to sleep.

I have 13 antique clocks in my home. Some of these clocks work and others will never tick-tock again. But I didn't have the heart to turn them away. They hang decoratively with other lovely items of collection. This week I finished my first embroidered clock and share it with you now. The rest of the collection will appear tomorrow in a completed set.

Borrow a battery clock from an old flea market piece... a child's neglected wall clock or a dollar store find. Stitch this embroidered clock and mount it inside a picture frame. Install the clock and set the frame on an elegant easel.... and enjoy the TICK-TOCK of beauty.

The WORST did happen!

They say, "BACKUP-BACKUP-BACKUP!" and we want to add "LOCATION-LOCATION-LOCATION!" After 6 weeks of on again, off again silence we are back online! Yes, the worst happened but this lesson isn't one we failed. Our server was performing it's checks and backing up to an external hard drive as it is instructed to. The strangest thing is that it backed up everything, but most of the archive was corrupt. It even told us that the backups were checked for clarity and synchronized too!

Although I have lost 4 years of drawn art and designs I have the final products staring at me daily at my shop. I'm thrilled they continue to make each and every one of the customers who purchase them SMILE....

I have graphic tablet and pen in hand this weekend to begin creating once again and it feels refreshing... a big thank you to everyone for being so patient. Pixie's Rule continues...

Nature never ceases to amaze me and growing up here in rural Arkansas has been the biggest pleasure of my life as the weather never ceases to disappoint.

We've just come out of one of the largest American ice storms in weather history for length of land mass.

The damages sustained to the electrical grid is tremendous... but the quiet beauty of the surreal images is astounding. God never ceases to please the eye with nature's palette.

Praying for those without warmth that their spirits remain high and their smiles wide. Help is on the way.

Well... I'm back in my studio after a much needed rest! It was GRAND sleeping in and having someone else cook! My creative juices were put on hold and given time to regenerate and now I'm ready for 2009! My goodness where did 2008 go?

It's ice and winter weather now and that brings out the crazy quilter in me! I love sitting by the fire and stitching! I'm working on those cute Winter Nymphs for you all as well!

Our next design in our Cherry Pit Bags is released! Small pink sweetheart roses intertwine with gilded trellis and swirls! These are wonderful to give as gifts. Mist with water and heat one minute in the microwave. They make a great soothing "balm". Place into a freezer bag and freeze in your freezer for a cold compress. Cherry pits make the BEST soothing bags because they retain the heat and cold for longer amounts of time than the rice bags you've seen.

Many of you already know WHY "Kitty Kitty Designs" is called as such... but have you seen why? As you can see by this pic, he's a lovable Tuxedo who is my "bestus" pal. He's a scamper and will appear in the best and worst of places in my studio.

Also notice his love of fleece and hiding under it. You would think that because he once had his tail nearly stitched to a quilt in the works that he would learn not to do such precarious acts!

Ahhh but he makes me giggle and smile because he's never really far away... and to find him, all I need to do is start my machine! He'll appear with bright eyes ready to swat at the presser foot!

I have to brag... because this photo captured my heart and left me smiling for quite a while! A month ago, November 2008, I created the "Twelve Days of Christmas" in special embroidery formats for my wonderful customers to use this holiday.

Today, a special photo was posted that shows the excellent stitching work of "Gilda" and my goodness! Her selection of fabric and her skill in sewing show as you can see...

Gilda chose the last three of the design set for her pillow shams and LOOK at the fabric on her spread! It's the "Twelve Days of Christmas" motif! Beautiful display for this holiday season.

I'm in love with lace. I cannot have enough of it gracing my home and at Christmas time, lace just replaces missing snow! It's softness and delicate structure reminds me of snowflakes stuck to my windows.

Although many years I have a green Christmas, I can pull out my lace decorations and enjoy the frostiness of the decor reminiscent of loads of snow as a child living up north.

I've started a creation that has been on my wish list for a few years now. I always adored them in the stores at Christmas time but never quite found the one I would love to have displayed in our home for the holiday season.

Queen Tooth Fairy

I have a love for dolls... since the first doll I received, Christmas 1964 that cried when her arm was lowered and drank from a fake pink baby bottle that held real liquid!! We really thought we had something there and the older dolls with their weighted eyes and LONG lashes still bring back many fond memories for me.

I tried several years ago to learn the art of Fimo molding hands feet and faces, sculpting dolls like my favorite artist, Patty Culea. This is my first doll created in 2003. We laughed hilariously as she came to life because she reminded my elderly mother of "Phyllis Diller"!

She hangs proudly in my sewing studio and watches over me while I work... I still stare up at her and smile... she really turned out as I wanted her to, a matronly "Tooth Fairy" complete with Fimo molars and stitched by hand using antique doilies, 1920's lace collar for her gown and blue topaz stones with heart dangles gracing her hair. Her lace collar gown is accented with Majorca seed pearls. Her toes are painted RED and she gracefully carries a Pink Tourmaline stone as a toe ring!

Ahhh... I had such fun creating her and she went on display for years in my shop. Eager children would want me to lift her glass covered throne so they could touch her sheep's wool hair and "Ooooo and Ahhhh" over the "Queen Tooth Fairy" as we finally named her.

Wasn't the Tooth Fairy a special time for you as a child? It meant the passing of youth to an older age was your onset. "Time to grow up!" my dear Nana would say as she placed my tooth under my pillow... for the tooth fairy. "You might be lucky! The 'Queen Tooth Fairy' may grace your sleep!"

"Queen Tooth Fairy" brings back the memories of "peeking" at my Nana while she slipped a quarter under my pillow as I slept.

For SHE truly was a "Queen" to me.

We've taken a wonderful design from digitizing designer and fellow Sensible Chic Diva, Sherry Titzer and created and embellished the "Vintage Styled Cell Pouches". Each pouch holds your cell phone securely to your belt, belt loop, purse handle or hanging from your favorite tote!

Each cell pouch is embellished with a vintage brooch and pewter charms that represent the buyers lifestyle. An initial in Edwardian Script is embroidered on the front pouch. Mock Cathedral Window Quiltingle

Well... I'm going to brag a bit! I love to quilt and could do this all day and night if my body would let me! The heritage quilt blocks are my all time favorite to stitch. Without our generational "sisters in stitching" creating the wonderful blocks they found useful for their every day needs, we wouldn't have much to go on, would we?

Five years ago I added machine embroidery to my life. I never dreamed this venture would help me create my quilts with such added enjoyments as dimensional embellishment! One day this winter when things were slow... I was conversing with friends online who quilt and a very close friend was creating a Cathedral Windows quilt. It was a King Size endeavor for her master bedroom and it was beautiful! It took her a year to create!

I thought... why can't I make a MOCK Cathedral Window using the embroidery machine? So my pattern tester and I set out to create a block that the embroidery machine enthusiast could use on their embroidery machine that would lend the same appearance as the hand stitched block. After hours of digitizing and with my pattern tester stitching the block, I came up with "Mock Cathedral Window"!

The block stitches out beautifully and is our best seller in the single blocks category with sales coming in daily for this design.

Embroidered Toilet Paper

We really love embroidery... we live this daily and our minds race with "what do I embroider on next?" You might think us a bit strange at times... as we CAUTION you NOT TO STAND STILL TOO LONG... or you might become "embroidered" too!

One of our most popular items that still brings giggles of laughter was to stitch on toilet paper!

Yes... you have read correctly. TOILET PAPER.

Christmas 2007 we presented to our guests as they milled about our open house, a bathroom complete with lotions, soaps and TOILET PAPER! (You would think a bathroom SHOULD have toilet paper in it...) But MONOGRAMMED TOILET PAPER? YES!

What howls of laughter were heard through out our home as we gathered to "listen" at suppressed laughter as each guest entered our "bathroom". We heard chuckles... snorts and down right belly laughs and even had one guest bring a cellophane, decoratively wrapped roll out for his wife to place near her purse!

We had developed a gift that now is used for corporate executive bathrooms and private jets. Company names are stitched on TOILET PAPER and laid for guests to find.

Many HATE removing the cellophane to use it and prefer to keep the rolls for their collections.

That's what I always say!

It has to be "Pink" (I'm sure my friends and family can quote me...) "Pink" says it all! Lemonade...sherbet....cupcakes....polka-dots....fabric....crayons.... It Must Be "Pink"!

Okay, I'll admit that "Pink" on a Hippo WOULD look funny.... But wouldn't that make you laugh?

"Laughter" is what it's all about... I think I'll make mine "Pink"!
